Мераксы были примерно 11 метров в длинну, от морды до кончика хвоста, и весили около 4000 килограмм. Что касается крошечных рук, обнаружилось что три крупные семейства терапод эволюционировали одинаково, череп со временем становился больше, а руки укорачивались. Исследователи предположили, что у маленьких рук не было какой-то особой цели, просто их эволюция всегда была вторична по отношению к черепу, вот и не развились.

Discovery provides insight about the evolution and anatomy of big, carnivorous dinosaurs MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (07/07/2022)—A team co-led by University of Minnesota Twin Cities researcher Peter Makovicky and Argentinean colleagues Juan Canale and Sebastian Apesteguía has discovered a new huge, meat-eating dinosaur, dubbed Meraxes gigas. The new dinosaur provides clues about the evolution and biology of dinosaurs such as the Carcharodontosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex—specifically, why these animals had such big skulls and tiny arms. The study is published in Current Biology, a peer-reviewed scientific biology journal. The researchers initially discovered Meraxes in Patagonia in 2012 and have spent the last several years extracting, preparing, and analyzing the specimen.
